In the early nineteenth century, the grove, from which subsequently the city Park was formed, was outside of Saratov. On May 27, 1935 it was decided to establish in this place City Park of culture and rest. A musical bandstand and pavilion, a cinema, a library and a reading room, a water base, shooting ranges, amusement rides, children's and sports playgrounds, cafes and kiosks were built there. The Park was named after Maxim Gorky, a distinguished Russian writer. Continuing the tradition of the past, city officials made the Park the main venue of the celebrations, carnivals, exhibitions, lectures and the may day. The Park was decorated with carved wooden heroes of fairy tales. The total area is equal to 17.6 hectares. The most remarkable natural object in the Park is oak grove, the age of many trees exceeds 200 years and they can reach the height of 25 m. The wildlife in the Park is represented by squirrels, swans and ducks, turtles and a bear. A chess club, several cafes, a skating rink and a playground were opened for visitors.
Currently, the Park has 70 species of trees and shrub species (41 species of trees and shrubs 29): oak, common elm and small-leaved lime, thuja occidentalis, and several species of poplars, acacia, Prunus and other shrubs – lilac, hawthorn, cotoneaster.
If you can enter the Park via the main entrance from Chernyshevskogo street, then once you get into the realm of the oak trees on the main alley. They create shade and coolness with their spreading crowns, even on the hottest days. The regular style is characterized by the geometrization of alleys, flower-beds, clear contours of the Park sites. The landscape consists of winding paths, a loose grouping of trees and shrubs.
City Park is the only place in Saratov, where in the city limits grow oaks. So to save this unique grove
is our duty.
